Ingredients

For the Filling:
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 (10 ounce) can diced tomatoes and green chilies undrained
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
For the Bread:
  • 1 loaf (1 pound) Italian bread
  • 1/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Equipment

  • Skillet
  • Oven
  • Aluminum foil

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. Brown ground beef in a skillet over medium heat. Drain off any excess grease.
  3. Stir in onion, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the onion is softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Add diced tomatoes and green chilies; cook for 5 minutes more.
  5. Remove from heat and stir in cheddar and mozzarella cheeses.
  6. Cut the Italian bread in half lengthwise.
  7. Hollow out the inside of both halves, leaving about a 1/2-inch border.
  8. Drizzle melted butter and Worcestershire sauce over both halves of the bread.
  9. Fill the bread halves with the cheeseburger mixture.
  10. Place both halves together. Wrap the bread tightly in aluminum foil and bake for 20 minutes. Remove the foil.
  11. Bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes or until the cheese is melted and gooey.
  12. Slice and serve hot!

Notes

To prevent the bread from becoming soggy, ensure you drain all excess grease from the ground beef after browning. Feel free to experiment with different types of cheese. Pepper jack or provolone would be delicious additions. For a spicier kick, add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the ground beef mixture. If you don’t have Italian bread, a French baguette will work just as well. For an extra flavorful crust, consider sprinkling garlic powder or Italian seasoning on top of the melted butter before drizzling it over the bread. To make ahead, assemble the Easy Cheeseburger Garbage Bread and keep it in the refrigerator until ready to bake. Add about 10 minutes to the baking time if baking from cold. This recipe is incredibly versatile, so don’t hesitate to customize it to your liking!
