Ingredients

  • 2 slices bread Sourdough or multi-grain work great
  • 2 slices cheddar cheese
  • 1 tablespoon butter softened
  • A light spread mayonnaise optional

Equipment

  • Nonstick Skillet
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. Optionally, spread a think layer of mayonnaise on the opposite sides of the bread.
  2. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
  3. Top the bread with two slices of cheddar cheese.
  4. Place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese, butter-side up.
  5. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
  6. Remove from skillet and cut in half diagonally.
  7. Serve immediately!

Notes

To achieve grilled cheese perfection, start with quality ingredients and cook over medium-low heat. Experiment with different cheeses like Gruyere, provolone, or pepper jack. Consider adding a thin layer of mayonnaise to the outside of the bread instead of butter for an extra crispy crust. Pressing the sandwich with a spatula while cooking helps ensure even contact with the pan.
