Method
- Spread softened butter evenly on one side of each slice of bread. Optionally, spread a think layer of mayonnaise on the opposite sides of the bread.
- Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in a nonstick skillet over medium-low heat.
- Top the bread with two slices of cheddar cheese.
- Place the second slice of bread on top of the cheese, butter-side up.
- Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted and gooey.
- Remove from skillet and cut in half diagonally.
- Serve immediately!
Notes
To achieve grilled cheese perfection, start with quality ingredients and cook over medium-low heat. Experiment with different cheeses like Gruyere, provolone, or pepper jack. Consider adding a thin layer of mayonnaise to the outside of the bread instead of butter for an extra crispy crust. Pressing the sandwich with a spatula while cooking helps ensure even contact with the pan.
